Alan Reid calls for an end to Scotland’s sewage dumping scandal
21 Oct 2025
Argyll & Bute had the highest number of sewage dumps in Scotland last year, with 2,693 recorded incidents in 2024. The true figure may be even higher due to incomplete monitoring across overflow sites.
One major concern is Ardnadam on the Holy Loch, where Environmental Standards Scotland (ESS) identified 31 potential instances in which sewage was dumped on dry days.
The Liberal Democrats are calling for a Clean Water Act to modernise the sewer network, enforce monitoring, ban dumping in protected areas, and protect Scotland’s rivers and lochs.
